CSV import troubleshooting checklist

Are you having issues uploading a CSV to create a LeaseUp survey? Run through this short checklist to quickly identify the problem.

Updated over 5 months ago

LeaseUp’s CSV import lets you quickly build detailed digital reports from any data source, but some users experience problems when trying to upload a CSV. 99% of the time, this is because of how one or more addresses in the CSV are formatted.

LeaseUp uses the Google Maps API, which requires a specific format for any address included in a CSV file. If the address formatting is off, the CSV won't upload correctly and it might seem like the software freezes during CSV upload.

If you’re encountering problems uploading a CSV in LeaseUp, use this step-by-step checklist to troubleshoot the problem:

Does the first row of the CSV include the field names?

The first row must include field names or else the import won’t work. Check if the first row of the CSV includes field names. Field names are necessary for import.

Does every row have a complete address?

Every row must include a complete address with a street number, city, and state.

Complete addresses can be included in an “Address” field, or addresses can be split across separate fields for street number, city, and state.

The best address formats are:

  • Full address (including street, city, state, and zip code) in a single column

  • Full address (including street, city, state, and zip code) in multiple columns

  • Street, city, and zip code columns

Every address must include all three pieces of data (street #, city, and state). Zip codes will not present any problems, but they’re not required.

Do any of the addresses have more than (or less than) a single street number?

Verify that each address contains a single street number:

  • Don’t use street number ranges (e.g., 51-55 Main St). Use a single street number instead.

  • Don’t use intersections instead of street numbers (e.g., Main and 1st).

  • For undeveloped or unlisted properties, use an existing address closest to the target property.

Is any of the address info repeated?

Every row must include ONLY ONE complete address with a street number, city, and state.

For example, if you have a column with the entire address (number, city, state) and a second column for the city or state, this redundant information will cause an upload error.

Make sure that each row does not repeat address info.

Does an address include a building or suite number?

Including a building or suite number in the address field (e.g., 100 Main St., Suite 101) will create an error when importing. If your addresses have these details, create a new field in a new column of the CSV, and move the building/suite information there.

Create a separate entry for each property (e.g. 100 Main St., Suite 101 in one row; 100 Main Street, Suite 202 in a second row).

Validate an address using Google Maps

If you’ve gone through the checklist and are still unable to upload your CSV, you may need to manually check each address in Google Maps to fix the problem.

Go to google.com/maps, paste an address in the search bar, and press enter.

If the default search result is different from the address you searched, click the “Copy address” button in the address field below the search bar and icons. Paste this address into the CSV to replace the address that is causing upload issues.
